Everyone in a congregation should be able to follow the sermon and keep their own notes, whatever device they use and however they use it. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, level AA, and the newer WCAG 2.2 additions, on every page of SynchedWord.
What you can adjust
- Text size — A, A+ or A++, in Settings. Your browser's own zoom works on every page too.
- High contrast — in Settings, in both light and dark.
- Light or dark — follows your device's setting, or choose one in Settings.
- Words of Jesus in red — on by default; turn it off in Settings if red text is harder for you to read.
- Less motion — if your device is set to reduce motion, the app's animations stop.
How the app is built to work
- Screen readers. When the presenter reveals a new passage or note during a live service, it is announced. Pages have headings and landmarks to move between, every control has a name, and error messages are read out when they appear.
- Keyboard. Everything can be reached and used without a mouse or touch screen. Presenters can reveal the next passage with the → key. Passages and notes can be reordered with ↑ and ↓ buttons as well as by dragging.
- No camera needed. Every service can be joined by typing its code instead of scanning the QR code.
- No time limits. Nothing in the app expires while you are reading or writing. If you are watching a service online, you can delay the passages to match your stream.
- Colour. Text and controls meet WCAG contrast levels in every theme, and colour is never the only way something is shown.
Known limitations
- Sermon outlines and notes are written by each church's presenter. We cannot control how they are written. If a presenter's content is hard to follow, please tell us anyway.
- SynchedWord is new. We test every page with automated accessibility tools and by hand, but it has not yet been reviewed by an independent accessibility specialist or tested by people who use assistive technology every day. Both are planned.
Tell us about a barrier
If something in SynchedWord does not work for you, please write to [SUPPORT EMAIL] with “Accessibility” in the subject. Tell us the page and what happened, and, if you can, the device and any assistive technology you use. We aim to reply within 5 business days. If something cannot be fixed straight away, we will help you get the same information another way in the meantime.
